One of the major draw-backs of using SharePoint Designer for workflow is the need to crack-it open in your production pnvironment; there is no MS approved way around it. Which means, if you develop an SPD workflow in a development environment, you are then forced to recreate every step in your production environment. This process is quite prone to errors.
